What is Coaching?
Results Coaching System define coaching as Facilitating positive change by improving the quality of thinking. Coaching is a relatively recent discipline and still doesn’t have a world wide governing body. Descriptions used by some of the major coaching authorities are:

“..unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.”
Sir John Whitmore
Author of ‘Coaching for Performance’

“Coaching is an interactive process that helps individuals and organizations to develop more rapidly and produce more satisfying results. Coaches work with clients in all areas including business, career, finances, health and relationships. As a result of coaching, clients set better goals, take more action, make better decisions, and more fully use their natural strengths.”
International Coach Federation

“Coaching is an interactive process where the coach guides and facilitates the client’s progress towards defined goals. These may concern relationships, career, self-confidence, financial matters or, a more general uneasy feeling that life has ‘drifted off course’. Coaching is a one-to-one relationship between a client and their coach. Regular sessions are held either face-to-face or over the telephone with action taken by the client between each session.”
The Coaching Academy

Life Coaching is the newest, fastest and most effective way to reassess and rework any area of your life. What a personal trainer does for your body; a life coach does for your life.”

How does coaching differ from counselling, mentoring, consultancy etc?
If you think of your life represented on a scale between -10 and +10, where 0 is considered a normal life we can say that counselling or therapy can take you from -4 or -10 and bring your life to 0. Coaching is used when your life is at 0 or 3 and helps you to take it to +5 or +10. Coaching is future based, solution and action orientated: it looks at where you want to go and helps you to achieve it (Please also see “What do coaches actually do?”)

Whilst mentoring, is about guiding an individual (and consultancy applies in a similar way for businesses) on the basis of the mentor’s previous experience, coaching is all about you yourself: a mentor/consultant must have some knowledge of the subject being discussed while a coach helps you to capitalize on your experience.

Coaching does share some principles with counselling, although it is not suitable for people with psychological or medical conditions, addictions or as a route to dealing with deep-seated trauma, although it may be appropriate as a tool later in the healing process.

What do coaches actually do?
Coaching is about asking questions to enable you find the path toward your solution. We operate according to the Results Coaching System a highly structured methodology based on the latest discoveries in neuroscience.

Throughout the discussions, the emphasis is on you. Coaching is designed to be non-directive, in other words, it is not the coach’s responsibility to tell you what you should do. That said, the coach is there to ensure that you remain on track with meeting your objectives and will be tough on you if you need it!

With Executive and Business Coaching you will be working on setting and achieving work-related targets to allow you to improving your performance at work.

How do people usually find a coach?
Many professional coaches are self-employed and not all of them advertise or have a website, so it is often based on referrals. Coach training organizations and associations will be able to provide lists of people who have trained with them or are members.

What if I achieve one of my goals goals before the end of the programme?
It can happen that one of the goals set at the beginning of the programme is achieved before the end of the agreed sessions. As a normal practice you will continue on the remaining goals and, in mutual agreement between you and the coach and if time allows, there will be the possibility of setting a new goal to be completed by the end of the sessions.

Why are there so many different coaching qualifications?
Currently, there is no central body in the UK regulating coaching. There are various organizations offering many types of training. These range from one-day courses to part-time courses which can take a couple of years to complete. There are also many books and home-study courses on coaching.

What should I do if there’s a problem?
If you have a problem regarding payment or you need to re-schedule your coaching appointments, you should discuss this directly with your coach.

In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with the way that you are being coached or your rate of progress, you should first raise the issue with your coach. This will give you and your coach the opportunity to address the way that you are working together.

If you are still unable to resolve the problem, please contact Massimo Gaetani, Managing Director of MaGa Coaching on +44 (0)1223 501493 or by email massimo@magacoaching.co.uk

I know a coach who charges less per session. Why are you charging more?
Many newly trained coaches charge a lower amount to gain experience. Our coaches are professionals who have worked in business for a number of years before training as coaches. They have also trained in other self-development techniques which gives them many tools that they can use to speed up your development. Their years of experience will help you identify the root of your problems much faster so you can get on with living the life you really want to lead.

With a cheaper, inexperienced coach, you may find that it takes you much longer to achieve the results you’re hoping for. So you would probably end up paying the same amount but over a longer period of time.

Why do coaches charge different amounts?
Fees charged by coaches vary according to their area of expertise and their level of experience. Factors influencing the prices are:

  • The type of coaching, for example, Personal Coaching is priced differently from Business Coaching. The main difference is the level of input from the coach.
  • The skills, experience and background of the coach.
  • Whether the coaching is conducted face-to-face or over the telephone. You can expect to pay more for face-to-face coaching.
  • The length of the sessions. Some coaches work on 45 minute sessions while our sessions last 60 minutes. Particularly with Executive, Business and Team Coaching, coaches may charge their time by the day or on a monthly basis, rather than by the hour.
  • How much support is provided between sessions, e.g. ‘top-up’ sessions by phone, e-mail, etc.

One of the questions you will be asked when you discuss your requirements with MaGa Coaching is “Do you have a budget in mind?”. This is to ensure that we are better equipped to match you with a coach that is at an affordable price for you.
